From Classroom to Spotlight—AMU’s Shakespeare in Performance

“O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” These iconic lines from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet might transport many of us back to the pages of high school English classes, but at Ave Maria University, they spring to life in a new way through the Shakespeare in Performance (SIP) minor.

Led by Dr. Travis Curtright, SIP has become a beacon of artistic excellence and a beloved program for any AMU student wanting to complement their studies. The program captivates audiences with its unique approach to classical theater, offering training in script analysis, movement on a thrust stage, improvisational comedy, and collaborative ensemble work. For the students involved, it’s a transformative experience.

As Dr. Curtright said, “SIP specializes in developing young actors. I don’t know of another program like ours anywhere. I treat all the plays as tools to help students grow both as artists and as people. … Shakespeare challenges every actor, regardless of experience, to transcend their limits.”

For those who have been part of the program, Dr. Curtright’s words ring true. Julia Nelson, a senior who is preparing to play Benvolia (based on Benvolio) in their upcoming performance of Romeo and Juliet, reflected on her personal growth throughout her time in SIP: "Throughout my four years in SIP, I have been challenged to become a better actor and person. The program has strengthened my public speaking skills, leadership qualities, and confidence. It has instilled in me a desire to work harder and do more because I know I am capable of it."

“Shakespeare in Performance has enriched my life so much here at AMU—by teaching me the wisdom of work and play,” John Paul Helms said. John Paul is preparing for the role of Romeo. He continued, “I have learned to work on any task with mindful attention and a growth mindset. The wisdom of play has helped me learn how to have fun when working on a project. …Being able to tell some of the greatest stories in English literature with my fellow actors and the different audiences has been so enriching.”

For every Romeo, there is his Juliet. And in this production, the role is portrayed by Rose Williams. Rose reflected, "One of the most enriching things about SIP is how it challenges me to give of myself to others. Through performing a scene, you learn how it truly is a practice of self-giving. There is nothing that brings people together quite like a show! It’s honestly when I feel most alive."

The SIP program represents an invaluable opportunity in higher education. As Dr. Curtright notes, “I don’t know of another minor like ours anywhere.” Its unique blend of artistic training, personal development, and community-building allows SIP to demonstrate the relevance of classical theater in today’s digitally dependent world.

Now is the perfect time to experience these remarkable student actors in action! Tickets are available for their upcoming show, Romeo and Juliet, running April 3-12, 2025.
