Welcome to another edition of the Ave Maria University Weekly Recap, where we look back on past recent events, including highlights from the 13th annual Scholarship Dinner, the baseball games, and Mr. Gyrene!
On February 29, AMU hosted our 13th annual Scholarship Dinner. Many students shared their testimonies, talents, and academic achievements. During the cocktail hour, theology, biochemistry, nursing, politics, history, and economics students presented their research projects with a student jazz ensemble playing in the background.
Senior Liam O’Rourke and his sister Olivia, a sophomore, were the MC’s of the event and gave great testimonies of AMU. Student Kristian Marks and alumnus Deacon Kevin Durand both gave keynote speeches speaking about their time at AMU.
The event concluded with a testimony from Dr. Michael Dauphinais, professor of theology, who touched on the beauty of AMU and the beauty that will come. We are so grateful to our donors and to our students for their contribution to this University, following St. Teresa of Calcutta's call to “do something beautiful for God.”
The AMU baseball team won its fourth doubleheader of the season against the Northwestern University Red Raiders. They won 5-2 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game. The Red Raiders were unable to put up any runs in the first game against junior pitcher Luke Zmolik. That is now 10 straight innings for Zmolik over his two starts without allowing a run. In the second game, the Gyrenes started scoring right away. With Cam Horner pitching this game, five of the seven innings were hitless for the Red Raiders, including the final inning that secured the win. The Gyrenes moved to a 10-8 record for the season after Monday's win. Wish them luck as they take on St. Thomas University next!
After beating Franciscan University 22-5 earlier this week, the AMU lacrosse team maintained their momentum and dominated 19-5 against their rivals, the Georgetown Tigers. The Gyrenes took the first six points of the game and the Tigers never gained a lead on them. Hannah Shaffrey led the team in scoring with seven points, scoring six goals and getting one assist. Oriana Eldridge, Lily Hynds, Claire Ichniowski, Alexandra Mazurczak, and Abbey Seiler all had multiple goals as well, with Anna Bocchino and Ali Fifield rounding out the score. This is a huge win for our Gyrenes and we could not be more excited for them!
A few weeks ago, we shared the results of the annual Mr. Gyrene competition. This week, check out the video recap showcasing some of the best moments from the competition!
