Welcome to another edition of the Ave Maria University Weekly Recap, where we revisit the most exciting events from the past week on campus.
The softball team won both games their games against the University of Fort Lauderdale this weekend. The first game ended in a 2-1 score for the Gyrenes with Annabella Phillips and Maya Gonzalez as top hitters, both going 2-for-3 in the victory. Game two ended in a 7-5 score for the Gyrenes after passing the lead back and forth with Fort Lauderdale. We are looking forward to our Gyrenes adding more wins to their 5-3 record!
This Saturday afternoon was the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for our brand-new Tom Golisano Field House. After being introduced by President Middendorf, Tom Monaghan and Tom Golisano each gave a brief testimony of their motivation to support AMU. It was an excellent celebration followed by some great Gyrene basketball!
The Shamar Dinner is an annual event put on by the men of Filii in Filio and Alethes Arete households where they serve the women of AMU. The ladies showed up wearing their Sunday best and the men escorted them to their tables. With piano in the background played by AMU student Bryan Stiemke, the guys served the women dinner while Fr. Joseph came to pray and give a brief speech in honor of women. It was a great night for everyone involved, including the Casino Royale dance that followed!
After the Shamar Dinner, the sister household of Alethes Arete—Verso il Cielo—hosted their annual Casino Royale Dance. It is a great time for dancing and fellowship, especially between households and the students they serve through their events. The dance just in time for an early Valentine's celebration!
AMU hosted Jazz Night in honor of Black History Month. Students enjoyed a night of jazz music played by our very own student Bryan Steimke, Joe Drost, and Ethan Wurm. During the intermission, Coach Jarvis McGarrah taught those in attendance about wines and whiskeys from African American winemakers and whiskey producers. It was a great evening of entertainment, history, and education.
