The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE Place) provides academic support and counseling for first-year Ave Maria University students. We aim to help students adjust to the greater academic rigor and autonomy of college and to prevent the stress caused by bad performance. If the students succeed in their classes, their years here at Ave Maria will be much more enjoyable.
We are open 43 hours a week and offer tutoring by the director, 5 graduate students and 2 undergraduates in all subjects taken by freshmen. We also advise students on academic issues, such as understanding their learning styles, study techniques, and which courses to take; and on related issues, such as scheduling, avoiding habits which are hazardous to their academic progress, minimizing distractions, and developing a positive attitude. We hold workshops on study skills, time management, and project management. In addition, we meet with students on academic probation or on scholarships which require them to maintain a high grade point average. We plan for academic success by setting down realistic written goals and means of achieving them. We try to provide a supportive yet relaxed atmosphere.
