University Policy on Accommodation for Persons with a Disability
In accordance with Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Ave Maria University strives to make reasonable adjustments in its policies, practices, services and facilities to ensure that qualified persons with disabilities are able to participate in all educational programs and activities.
Whenever an accommodation or auxiliary aid is necessary to ensure that a student with disabilities is given access to and full participation in any University program or service, the University is responsible for providing the program or service to which an individual requires access. The many Departments of Ave Maria University will work with the Adaptive Resource Center and appropriate federal and state agencies in order to ensure the provision of reasonable accommodations for each qualified student with disabilities.
Any student requiring specific accommodation or auxiliary aids must submit an application for such assistance through the Adaptive Resource Center. Proof of disability from a competent licensed authority will be required, as well as information regarding specific limitations for which the accommodation is requested.
Note: Ave Maria University assumes no responsibility for the personal assistance that may be necessary for independent living or for specialized medical care. As a result of limited health facilities and health care professionals on campus, students requiring personal health assistance should be prepared to bear the expense of this care through a general hospital or private physician/clinic of their choice.
The cooperation and support of all faculty and staff members is necessary in order to implement and maintain the policy:
- Physical access to at least one section of course offerings must be provided as necessary.
- Academic requirements which have not been demonstrated as essential to the program of instruction being pursued, nor to any directly related licensing requirement are subject to reasonable modification, i.e., extension of testing time limits, adaptations in format or presentation, etc.
- Auxiliary aids must be permitted when required to ensure full participation and equal educational opportunity for a student with a disability. Accommodations for students with disabilities minimize the impact of the disability on student performance and allow the student equal opportunity to demonstrate his or her knowledge. These accommodations are generally made on an individualized and flexible basis, with input from the student, instructor, and Adaptive Resource Center Counselor.
Documentation of a Disability:
Documentation which indicates that you have a specific disability is necessary for both legal and educational purposes. The appropriate documentation verifies your disability and qualifies you for services under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Compensatory services to address your disability are determined by the specific nature and severity of your disability.
This documentation should be included in an assessment report which must be completed by a professional qualified and licensed to diagnose the disability. The assessment should be recent (within three years) and should include: Original documents on the evaluator's letterhead.
- The type of disability diagnosed.
- The limits the disability imposes on your ability to function in an educational setting.
- The types of accommodations which will assist you in minimizing the impact of your your disability.
Obtaining a recent assessment is the responsibility of the student requesting accommodations. You may be able to obtain an assessment by requesting such information from your physician, or other medical personnel, psychologist, audiologist, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, private practitioners or other agencies serving people with disabilities in your area.
Request for accommodations cannot be granted without this supporting documentation. Once provided, it is not necessary to provide new information each year unless the nature of your disability changes significantly or you are requesting accommodations for a disability not mentioned in your original documentation.
